Golf Plus | Fort Lauderdale's T.J. Shuart breezes to State Mid-Amateur title at Sara Bay Country Club
Fort Lauderdale's T.J. Shuart blew past the field to capture the Florida State Golf Association's State Mid-Amateur held at Sara Bay Country Club last weekend. Shuart reached the 18th hole only once during the match play portion of the tournament for golfers aged 25 and older. During his match play assault, Shuart defeated top-seeded Joe Veneziano, of Mount Dora, 6-and-5 in the semifinals on Sunday before besting Tampa's Brian Armstrong 3-and-1 in Sunday afternoon's championship match.
Shuart completed an 11-0 record in FSGA match play competitions, while adding the Mid-Am title to his Amateur Match Play crown secured over the summer.
Bradenton amateur Charles Wang advanced through last week's first stage of Web.com Tour Qualifying School at the Grasslands in Lakeland. Wang fired a 15-under par 273 total to tie for ninth place to advance. He was the lone Manatee County golfer to secure one of the 24 qualifying berths awarded from the Grasslands.
Bradenton's Domenico Geminiani earned a $2,000 bonus for topping the West Florida Golf Tour points race for the summer season that concluded with the Summer Tour Championship at Black Diamond Ranch in Lecanto at the end of September. Bradenton's Samuel Chavez, who finished fourth, also received the bonus check that was awarded to the top three performers, because Tampa's David Branshaw didn't play in enough events.
The 10th annual Callaghan Tire Charity Pro-Am is scheduled for Nov. 8-10 at the Ritz-Carlton Members Golf Club and Lakewood Ranch Golf and Country Club. There are still a few spots left in the event, which has raised more than $600,000 to date for Golfers Against Cancer, which cuts a direct matching check to the Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa. The tournament features past legendary pros such as Tony Jacklin, Dow Finsterwald and Hollis Stacy to name a few. The cost is $1,900 per player, which includes golf and an event package for one and a one party guest. The tournament is contested on Monday, Nov. 9 and Tuesday, Nov. 10 with a live auction, silent auction, pairings party and practice round slated for Sunday, Nov. 8.
