Hometown heroes: Former Lakewood Ranch High star Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie making presence felt for Giants

Former Lakewood Ranch High standout Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie nearly contributed to his second takeaway this season when he drilled Colin Kaepernick during the Giants'30-27 win against the 49ers, knocking the ball out of the quarterback's hand. San Francisco, however, recovered.

It was part of another strong performance for Rodgers-Cromartie, who was playing in his second consecutive game after missing Week 3 due to a concussion. The cornerback recorded six tackles and broke up one pass. He ranks seventh on the team with 18 tackles this season.

MIKE JENKINS -- A  former Southeast Seminole, Jenkins started for the Buccaneers for the second straight week in place of injured cornerback Johnathan Banks on Sunday. The 30-year-old corner broke up one pass and recorded a tackle in Tampa Bay's 38-31 win against the Jaguars.

Jenkins has now played in three games this season and has four pass break ups and tackles.

KELVIN MCKNIGHT -- The true freshman, who was a first-team All-Area wide receiver for Manatee last year and a member of the Hurricanes' state championship-winning 400-meter relay team,

hasn't matched his stunning Week 1 performance when he caught six passes for 157 yards against Central Arkansas in his collegiate debut, but the wide receiver has been a consistent contributor for Samford.

Last Saturday, McKnight caught five passes for 23 yards and ran the ball four times for 25, a performance which also featured a highlight-reel juke.

JOHN RYAN MURPHY -- The catcher's third season in MLB officially came to an end last Tuesday as the Yankees bowed to the Astros 3-0 in the American League Wild Card Game. Although the former IMG star and Bradenton native didn't appear in the postseason, he was still part of history.

After starting behind the plate during relief pitcher Mariano Rivera's final game in 2014, Murphy was the catcher on Oct. 1 when New York clinched a playoff berth against the Red Sox and won its 10,000th game.

Murphy posted a .277/.327/.406 slash line in 172 plate appearances this season. He also hit three homers and drove in 14 runs.
