Community sports | Ellenton-trained figure skating pair earns international acclaim
In five months of training at Ellenton Ice and Sports Complex, Maximiliano Fernandez and Joy Weinberg have become the top ranked junior pair figure skating team in the United States, according to the International Skating Union.
During the past month, Fernandez and Weinberg have taken the national success global. They began September with a silver medal in the ISU Junior Grand Prix of Figure Skating in Colorado and finished the month with a sixth-place finish at the ISU Junior Grand Prix in Poland after being chosen from a pool of all other age-eligible teams by the United States Figure Skating Association.
Southeast hosts annual Volley for the Cure
The final week of high school volleyball's regular season is here and Southeast High School is rounding out its schedule with one of its most anticipated matches of the season. The Seminoles will host Palmetto High School on Tuesday for its annual Volley for the Cure match, a tradition started eight years ago by former head coach Nancy Cothron, who now leads Bayshore High School.
Southeast will decorate the entire gymnasium pink and both teams will wear pink jerseys, socks and ribbons. Even the officials will be using pink whistles and wearing pink T-shirts for the games.
The junior varsity match will begin at 6 p.m. with the varsity tilt beginning shortly after the JV match concludes, estimated to be around 7 p.m. The Noles will be selling special Volley for the Cure T-shirts and taking donations to benefit breast cancer awareness.
East Manatee Bulldogs split series with Palmetto Trojans
The East Manatee Bulldogs and Palmetto Trojans met for four Pop Warner Little Scholars football games this weekend at Lakewood Ranch Park and each team emerged with a pair of victories. The Trojans blanked the Bulldogs in both the mighty mites and junior midget divisions, including a 46-0 win in the latter, but East Manatee netted a pair of wins at the junior pee wee and pee wee levels. Palmetto's unlimited team also suffered a 26-0 loss to Liberty City.
The Manatee Wildcats and North Manatee Storm also met for a quartet of rivalry matches at G.T. Bray Park, and the Wildcats won this series. Manatee shut out the Storm in mighty mites in Bradenton, and won the pee wee and unlimited division games, as well. North Manatee earned a win in junior midgets. The Wildcats also played the South Pasco Predators twice, winning in the mighty mites division and losing in junior pee wee. The junior pee wee storm also played a game at Valrico Park, falling to the Valrico Rams 33-0.
