Ellenton skaters Felicia Zhang and Nathan Bartholomay are Sochi bound
Felicia Zhang and Nathan Bartholomay are Sochi bound.
The pairs skaters, who train at Ellenton Ice and Sports Complex, made the U.S. Olympic figure skating team. The team was announced Sunday afternoon by U.S. Figure Skating on the heels of Saturday's U.S. Championships finals for women, pairs and ice dancing in Boston.
Zhang and Bartolomay finished second at the U.S. Championships and will join champions Simon Shnapir and Marissa Castelli in Sochi, Russia, for the 2014 Games.
The Ellenton skaters narrowly beat out 2012 U.S. champions Caydee Denney and John Coughlin for second place after Saturday's free skate in Boston. Although two pairs teams are picked for the Olympics, there was no guarantee that Zhang and Bartholomay would be chosen. Denney, who once trained at Ellenton, finished 13th at the 2010 Olympics with partner Jeremy Barrett.
Two-time national champion Ashley Wagner made the women's individual team despite finishing fourth at the U.S. Championships. She will join champion Gracie Gold and second-place finisher Polina Edmunds in Sochi.
Three ice dance teams also were chosen, and they were the top three finishers at the U.S. Championships. Winners Meryl Davis and Charlie White will join Madison Chock and Evan Bates and Maia Shibutani and Alex Shibutani.
