Local briefs | SCF men's basketball team gives head coach Elliot Washington his first win
MANATEE — Obinna Oleka returned from suspension with a vengeance, scoring 27 points, grabbing 19 rebounds and dishing out eight assists to hand State College of Florida men’s basketball coach Elliot Washington his first collegiate victory, 92-83 over Miami Dade College on Friday.
Oleka, a University of Texas commit, had not played this season for the Manatees (1-9) because of a violation team rules.
Deonte Hearns added 22 points and 17 rebounds, Laquon Kirce had 13 points, and Gabriel Dos Santos pitched in with 12 points for SCF, which knocked off the state’s sixth-ranked team in the Sharks (7-2).
Girls basketball: Southeast routs Venice in shootout
SARASOTA — Keshawna Robinson scored 24 points and nabbed seven rebounds as the Southeast girls basketball team defeated Venice 54-20 on the first day of the Lady Sailors Thanksgiving Shootout hosted by Sarasota High.
DeAngela Mathis had 12 points, six rebounds, six assists and six steals for the Seminoles (7-1). Bevin Mays contributed nine points and six boards.
Southeast will meet Sarasota at 7:30 p.m. Saturday. The Lady Sailors handed the Seminoles their lone loss.
ELSEWHERE — Palmetto and Lakewood Ranch cruised to victories in the first round of the Bartow Thanksgiving Shootout in Bartow. The Tigers (5-0) got 22 points from Jermisha Collins and 14 from Conner Rozier to get past St. Petersburg Gibbs 52-35. The Mustangs (5-0) defeated Hillsborough 55-23 behind 14 points from Kailyn Scully. Elise Spiller and LaDhazia Williams had 12 points apiece for Lakewood Ranch. Lakewood Ranch meets West Port at noon Saturday, followed by Palmetto and Hillsborough.
