Cincinnati Under NCAA Investigation After Accusations by Brendan Sorsby's Agent
Brendan Sorsby won't be playing college or pro football in 2026, but he could end up landing one college program in hot water.
During an interview with 105.3 The Fan in Dallas last month, Sorsby's agent Ron Slavin threw Sorsby's former school, the University of Cincinnati, under the bus for allegedly knowing about his client's gambling addiction and doing nothing about it.
"Nobody knew when he was in the portal that this was happening," Slavin said. "… If anybody should be questioned or catching heat, it should be Cincinnati because they knew for two years and never said anything or didn't do anything about it. That's the part of the story that gets lost."
Slavin's remarks seemingly caught the attention of the NCAA, which is now investigating the school, according to Ross Dellenger of Yahoo Sports.
"The NCAA has sent a letter of inquiry to the University of Cincinnati related to Sorsby’s time at the school, those with knowledge tell Yahoo Sports," Dellenger wrote. "An inquiry letter is not uncommon and doesn’t necessarily signal wrongdoing, but it is often the start of an investigative process over possible rules violations, one that often is a collaborative effort with the school itself."
The NCAA's motives seem purely exploratory right now, but if there is any evidence that the school knew about Sorsby's gambling issues - proving Slavin's accusations true - it could cost the university in the form of fines, forfeited wins, and loss of scholarships.
Cincinnati released a statement not long after Slavin's accusations vehemently denying that it knew anything about Sorsby betting on games during his time with the team.
"We will reiterate what we have said before: all of our student-athletes receive extensive gambling education multiple times throughout the year, and we would never knowingly play an athlete who violated NCAA sports wagering regulations," the school stated. "If we ever became aware of impermissible wagering, we would report to the NCAA and comply with sanctions."
