Red Sox Announce Willson Contreras News After Leaving White Sox Game

Willson Contreras has been everything the Boston Red Sox hoped for and more in his first season with the club. After arriving in Boston during the offseason, the veteran first baseman has quickly become the centerpiece of the lineup. He earned his fourth All-Star selection and has helped fuel the Red Sox's recent turnaround.

Entering Wednesday's game against the Chicago White Sox, Contreras was batting .287 with 20 home runs, 61 RBIs and an .926OPS.

The Red Sox looked to extend their winning streak in Chicago, with Contreras making his 88th appearance of the season. Boston carried a 3-0 lead into the fourth inning and looked to be cruising to another victory.

However, concern spread through the dugout after the veteran slugger appeared to injure himself over the course of two plate appearances.

In the third inning, Contreras fouled a pitch sharply off his left foot. An inning later, after lifting a fly ball for his second out of the game, he appeared to roll his ankle while running through first base. He immediately began limping and was visibly uncomfortable as he walked back toward the dugout.

Moments later, Romy Gonzalez replaced Contreras, and the Red Sox subsequently announced that the veteran had exited the game with a foot contusion.

This could be a tough blow for Boston. After a sluggish first half, the Red Sox have finally begun to find their rhythm, entering Wednesday 41-48, fourth in the American League East and seeking a sixth consecutive victory. They have won nine of their last 11 games to climb back toward contention, and losing their hottest hitter for any significant period would be a major setback just days before the All-Star break.

The Red Sox will hope Wednesday's injury proves to be nothing more than a scare. Boston wraps up its series against the White Sox on Thursday before continuing its road trip with a three-game series against the New York Mets, and the club will be eager to have Contreras available as it looks to carry its recent momentum into the second half of the season.
