Athletics Announce Nick Kurtz Update After Exiting Tigers Game
The Athletics provided an encouraging clarification on Nick Kurtz after the rookie first baseman exited Wednesday night's game against the Detroit Tigers.
Although Kurtz appeared to injure himself while fielding a throw at first base in the opening inning, the club later announced his departure was due to an illness rather than an apparent hand injury.
Kurtz left the game before his second plate appearance after going 0-for-1 at the plate. Jeff McNeil replaced him defensively at first base to begin the second inning, while the Athletics did not release any additional details about the illness or his availability beyond Wednesday's update.

The 23-year-old has become one of the Athletics' most productive hitters this season after being selected fourth overall in the 2024 MLB Draft out of Wake Forest. Through 90 games, Kurtz is batting .271 with 20 home runs, 66 RBIs and a .410 on-base percentage, helping earn his first American League All-Star starting selection.
Wednesday's announcement clarified what initially appeared to be a possible injury scare. While Kurtz looked uncomfortable after the defensive play in the first inning, the Athletics officially listed illness as the reason for his early exit.
Kurtz's absence leaves a temporary void in the middle of Oakland's lineup, though the club has not indicated whether the illness is expected to affect his availability beyond Wednesday's game. Additional updates are expected once the Athletics provide more information.
For now, the official designation offers reassurance that Kurtz did not leave because of the apparent hand issue, while attention shifts to whether the young slugger will be available for the remainder of the series against Detroit.
