Samad Taylor Injury: Padres Infielder Reveals Update Before Diamondbacks Game

Samad Taylor is day-to-day with a right side tweak after exiting Tuesday's game against the Arizona Diamondbacks, putting his status for Wednesday's series game in doubt.

The San Diego Padres outfielder came out of Tuesday's loss after fouling a ball off his foot and was not moving well, according to Jeff Sanders of the San Diego Union-Tribune. Taylor addressed reporters on Wednesday and said he is day-to-day, leaving the Padres to manage his availability ahead of the series continuation at Petco Park.

Taylor has been one of San Diego's best stories of the season. The 27-year-old was signed to a minor league deal on January 24 and called up on June 3. He quickly became a fixture in the starting lineup, batting .330 to lead the Padres' roster and posting an .877 OPS with nine RBI over his first 15 big-league games this season.

He was drafted by the Cleveland Indians in the 10th round of the 2016 MLB Draft out of Corona High School in California. This is his fifth organization, having also spent time with the Toronto Blue Jays, Kansas City Royals and Seattle Mariners. He made his big-league debut on June 17, 2023 with the Royals.

Taylor plays left and right field, giving manager Craig Stammen lineup flexibility depending on where Fernando Tatis Jr. is stationed on a given night. His ability to play multiple positions makes his availability even more valuable to a team dealing with several roster-level concerns.

The Padres are 45-46 and third in the National League West entering Wednesday's series game against the Diamondbacks. San Diego trails the two-time defending champion Los Angeles Dodgers by 14 games but remains in the wild card conversation.

If Taylor is unable to play on Wednesday, Gavin Sheets figures to start in his place in left field. The Padres will need Taylor healthy as they try to build momentum heading into the All-Star break.
