Caleb Downs Is Already Making an Impression and Dallas Needs Him to Keep It Going
The Dallas Cowboys didn't trade up in the first round of the 2026 NFL Draft simply to add another talented player. They made an aggressive move because they believed Caleb Downs could become the centerpiece of a defense that desperately needed a new identity.
Only a few months into his NFL career, Downs is already showing that he's the one.
From mandatory minicamp through offseason workouts, teammates, coaches, and even veteran quarterback Dak Prescott have all echoed the same sentiment: Downs doesn't carry himself like a rookie. He looks prepared, confident, and comfortable leading one of the league's most important defensive positions.
For Dallas, those early impressions couldn't come at a better time.

Rookies often arrive with elite athleticism. Very few arrive with the mental processing that separates good players from great ones.
That's where Downs has immediately stood out.
Throughout minicamp, Cowboys coaches repeatedly praised his football intelligence, communication skills and versatility. Whether lining up at safety, rotating into the slot or even playing within the box, Downs rarely looked overwhelmed. Instead, he consistently appeared to be one step ahead.
Prescott was among those impressed by how quickly Downs absorbed the playbook and communicated on the field.
"True young pro. Super, super excited for him," Prescott said of Downs, via the team's web site. "Young career, long career ahead of him. I could talk about him honestly all day. I've gotten a chance to spend some time with him here, golfed with him outside of the facility. He's wired the right way. Super excited for him to be on that defense, to lead the defense, not just the defense this team. He's a good example of that whole rookie class. They all follow his lead to that extent. Impressed, very impressed.
That maturity is exactly why Dallas felt comfortable trading up to get the All-American safety and so far, he is already making a name for himself.
