Former Chiefs Star Reacts Strongly to L'Jarius Sneed Signing
The Kansas City Chiefs bid farewell to four key pieces of their defense this offseason.
Most notably, they traded All-Pro cornerback Trent McDuffie to the Los Angeles Rams Once free agency opened, cornerback Jaylen Watson followed McDuffie to the Rams, safety Bryan Cook signed with the Cincinnati Bengals, and linebacker Leo Chenal signed with the Washington Commanders.
All of them are members of the Chiefs’ all-time 2022 draft class that, according to general manager Brett Veach, was “a big reason why” the franchise won back-to-back Super Bowls and reached a third for a chance at the unprecedented three-peat.
Cornerback L’Jarius Sneed was a central piece to the back-to-back championships, too. And the Chiefs welcomed him back on a one-year contract on Monday.
McDuffie reposted the news to his Instagram Story and wrote, “They got that bull back @Sneed_”
Sneed sent a message of his own by posting a workout video to Instagram captioned, “Stay True Through it All.” Chiefs All-Pro tight end Travis Kelce liked the post.
The Chiefs drafted Sneed in the fourth round of the 2020 NFL Draft. His best NFL season was undoubtedly his 2023 campaign, in which he and McDuffie formed the top shut-down corner due in the league.
Sneed will always be remembered in Chiefs lore for punching the ball out of Baltimore Ravens wide receiver Zay Flowers’ hands at the goal line in the AFC Championship Game in January 2024. The Chiefs won, 17-10, and went on to win Super Bowl LVIII over the San Francisco 49ers.
After that, the Chiefs traded Sneed to the Tennessee Titans in March 2024. He only played 12 games across two seasons for the Titans due to knee and quad injuries, and the team released him in March.
If Sneed is available - and that’s a big if - he could experience some degree of revival. Chiefs defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo will surely scheme up favorite situations for him to impact the game.
That said, Chiefs fans shouldn’t expect the 2023 version of Sneed to walk back into Arrowhead Stadium. Sneed will likely compete for snaps with Nohl Williams, a second-year physical corner, and the Chiefs are banking on 2026 sixth overall pick Mansoor Delane to become their next star in the defensive backfield.
