Lake Nona doubles tennis title; lacrosse, softball, flag football stars | Varsity Weekly
One day after leading the Lake Nona girls tennis team to a historic FHSAA Class 4A team title, sophomore Ashley Narath and senior Aspen Wooten put the icing on the cake by winning the individual singles and doubles championships on Wednesday.
Narath, playing high school tennis for the first time, capped an undefeated season with a 6-3, 6-2 victory in a matchup of standout sophomores vs. Payton Seidel-Lubowitz of Doral Academy.
Wooten and Narath teamed up to beat Seidel Lubowitz and Stefany Zamora 6-4, 6-4 for the doubles title at Sanlando Park in Altamonte Springs.
Lake Nona girls have won the state doubles championship three years in a row. Wooten teamed with senior Gabriela Almanza for the title last year.
Lake Buena Vista senior Wil Nguyen, the second seed in the 3A boys individual singles bracket, scored a 6-2, 6-0 win on Wednesday and added a 7-5, 6-1 Thursday victory against Mason Whitesides of Punta Gorda Charlotte. That advanced him to an afternoon matchup with top seed Luca Torres-Sigler of Spoto High School. They met in a semifinal last year, with Torres-Sigler winning in a third set tiebreaker.
Trinity Prep's boys ran into top-ranked True North Classical of Miami in a Thursday morning semifinal and lost 6-0.
Innovation's boys lost 4-3 to Matanzas in a Wednesday state quarterfinal team match.
Lacrosse
This weekend's region final results determine which teams reach the FHSAA state tournament, May 7-9, in Naples.
Area No. 1 Winter Park (18-1) is home against Boone (16-4) in Friday's 2A Region 2 boys showdown.
Saturday night girls finals have area No. 1 Lake Highland Prep (18-2) hosting Berkeley Prep (11-2) of Tampa in the 1A Region 2 final; Lake Mary (18-3) at Ponte Vedra (14-3) in 2A-1; and Hagerty (13-9) at Oviedo (19-1) in 2A-2 backyard rivalry matchup.
Softball
Lake Brantley (22-3), the area's top-ranked team, rolled to a 16-4 Wednesday road win against Apopka (20-5) to win the Class 7A District 3 championship. Maya Melendez, a ninth grader, went 3-for-4 with a home run, double and 7 RBI for the Patriots. Lauren Compton went 4-for-4 with 3 doubles and 4 RBI, and Auriana Turner was 2-for-2 with a triple and 3 RBI in the win.
Eustis (18-6) pitcher Carson Roden struck out nine in a complete game 2-1 victory vs. Villages Charter (16-10) for the 3A-7 crown.
St. Cloud (17-10) took the 7A-6 title with a 2-1 win against Harmony (12-11).
No. 2 University-Orange City (12-7) at No. 1 Spruce Creek (18-7) won 10-3 against University-Orange City (12-8) in 7A-2.
Seabreeze (11-12) shut out Bishop Moore 1-0 in 4A-6. The Hornets are 12-10.
Ocala Forest eked out a 2-1 win against Lake Minneola (15-8) in 6A-4.
The rest of this week's finals were scheduled for Thursday. That includes Winter Springs at East River, Winter Park at Hagerty, West Orange at East Ridge, Boone vs. Lake Nona (at Cypress Creek), The First Academy at Montverde Academy, Oviedo vs. Lake Howell (at Winter Park), Master's Academy at Geneva School, and Foundation Academy at Mount Dora Christian.
The four winners in each district advance to region quarterfinals set for Wednesday (1A-4A) and Thursday (5A-7A) next week. They will be joined by four at-large teams per region - based on FHSAA rankings.
Flag Football
Ocoee, the No. 8 seed in the 4A Region 1 tournament, pulled off a stunner with a 21-13 win against top seed Mandarin (14-3) in Jacksonville on Wednesday.
That marked the first regional win in program history for the Knights.
Seminole was the only one of the four rankings favorites in that region to score a win on Wednesday. The second seed Seminoles topped seventh seed Spruce Creek 13-7.
Frantashia Williams, the stellar senior quarterback for undefeated Deltona, ran for six touchdowns and passed for the other two in a wild 61-27 win against Ocala Vanguard. Williams has scrambled for 42 TDs this season and passed for 10 more.
West Orange scored a 35-12 win against Steinbrenner in Tampa in 4A-2.
Kissimmee Gateway scored an 18-0 shutout on the road against Gulf (14-4) in 2A-3.
