PGA Tour postpones Bradenton-area tournament after hurricanes. Here’s when it returns
A PGA Tour Champions golf tournament that made its debut in 2023 won’t return to Manatee County until 2025.
Due to Hurricane Helene and Hurricane Milton, tournament organizers announced Monday that the World Champions Cup at The Concession Golf Club is postponed for 2024.
The inaugural team tournament was held in December last year, when Team USA captured the title over Team International and Team Europe.
Jim Furyk, who won the 2003 United States Open and shot a PGA Tour-best 58 in 2016, captained the U.S. to victory. Other team members included Steve Stricker, Justin Leonard, David Toms, Jerry Kelly, Brett Quigley and Billy Andrade.
“Our goal with the World Champions Cup is to provide a first-class experience for all our partners and fans,” golf officials said in a news release. “We are pleased that the Bradenton area sustained minimal damage, but given the timing of the tournament in relation to the recent storms, we believe that focusing our efforts on the future is the in the best interests of everyone involved.”
Manatee County officials estimated Hurricane Milton caused more than $351 million in a preliminary damage report to the county’s unincorporated areas. The October hurricane occurred two weeks after Hurricane Helene delivered more than $358 million in damage to the same areas.
The World Champions Cup, televised nationally on ABC and ESPN in 2023, was scheduled for Dec. 5-8 this year. It was the penultimate tournament of the 2024 season. The PGA Tour Champions schedule for 2025 has not been released yet.
