Peter Jacobsen names chairman’s picks for PGA Tour Champions event coming to Bradenton
Three more players participating in the inaugural World Champions Cup were announced Monday.
The PGA Tour Champions event pitting the United States against Europe and Team International is scheduled for Dec. 7-10 at The Concession Golf Club in East Manatee.
ABC and ESPN will televise the tournament.
Tournament chairman Peter Jacobsen unveiled a chairman’s pick for each team Monday. The teams consist of six players, with a playing captain, two automatic qualifiers, two chairman’s picks and the highest-ranked non-qualified player on the Charles Schwab Cup standings.
Jacobsen’s selections for the three teams were as follows: Jerry Kelly (USA), Miguel Angel Jiménez (Europe) and Steven Alker (International).
“It’s exciting to be at this stage of the selection process,” Jacobsen said in a news release. “Steven, Miguel and Jerry are all stellar golfers who have proven themselves in international team competitions. We are thrilled that they’ve agreed to be a part of the inaugural World Champions Cup. These additions will only amplify the talent and rivalries on the course. We’re putting the pieces of the puzzle together, setting us up for a tremendous event.”
Jiménez, who won 21 times on the DP World Tour, has top 10 finishes in all four majors, including a tie for second at the 2000 U.S. Open and tie for third at the 2001 British Open. He also was a four-time Ryder Cup team member and 13-time PGA Tour Champions winner.
Kelly won three times on the PGA Tour, has 11 PGA Tour Champions titles and is a former President’s Cup team member.
Alker, a New Zealand native, has won six PGA Tour Champions tournaments since joining the senior circuit, including a major championship.
Earlier in October, David Toms (USA), Colin Montgomerie (Europe) and Retief Goosen (International) were announced as team members.
Other members for the team tournament include Steve Stricker (USA), Bernhard Langer (Europe) and Vijay Singh (International).
