A teen with brain cancer has a wish. Hurricanes' QB Malik Rosier wants to fulfill it.
Jordan Quintero is a 13-year-old sports fan from Tampa. Quintero also has an aggressive form of brain cancer, and is unable to travel from St. Joseph's Children's Hospital in Tampa.
So, through St. Petersburg's Children's Dream Fund, Quintero had a wish. He wants to meet some of his sports heroes. The list included Boston Celtics point guard Kyrie Irving, Dallas Cowboys running back Ezekiel Elliot and any player from the Miami Hurricanes.
The Hurricanes are Quintero's favorite team, Children's Dream Fund coordinator Mallory Young said. Quintero's father, Gerardo is a longtime season-ticket holder.
"Jordan's always loved going to games with him," Young said. "I believe that also his room is decorated with all the Miami memorabilia."
Young said Canes quarterback Malik Rosier is planning to drive to the Tampa hospital, and recruit as many teammates as he can, to meet with Quintero, who has glioblastoma multiforme brain cancer, in person.
"Some of his staff members at the hospital [have said] he's one of the most positive kids that they've ever met," Young said.
Children's Dream Fund board chair Danielle Kucera posted Quintero's wish on social media, and she's received outpouring of support to make it a reality.
"We call them dream makers, and that's folks out in the community," Kucera said. "Who are not obligating themselves monetarily, but saying, 'Please put me on an email if you need connections.' And without those people, we not be able to make this happen. The big concept behind making the dream come true is that it has nothing to do with money, necessarily, where you came from or your status in the community. ... It's about using the community to come together and use their connections for getting people to meet this little boy."
Kucera said the locally-run Children's Dream Fund has been in existence for more than 35 years, and they typically grant more than 100 dreams per year.
A recent dream granted, Kucera said, was flying a boy to Hawaii to meet actor Chris Pratt at the opening of his latest Jurrassic World movie. They also sent a teenager to see wrestling at the 2012 London Olympics.
"It's whatever the dream is of the child," Kucera said.
