Klenor, Saint Stephen’s in contention at Class 1A state golf

Saint Stephen’s junior Alan Klenor shot a 1-under 71 on Tuesday and was four shots off the pace after the first round of the Class 1A state championship at the Mission Inn Resort.

Klenor had five birdies and four bogeys to pace the Falcons, who were second after 18 holes at 13-over 301, trailing Winter Park Circle Christian by five shots.

Ryan Kinkead and David Hu shots 4-over 76s for Saint Stephen’s, while Song Bai carded a 78. Massimo Mbetse posted a 79, but his score didn’t count toward the team total.

Circle Christian’s Daniel Core opened with a 5-under 67 to take a two-shot lead.

The final 18 holes are scheduled for Wednesday.

In the girls competition, Saint Stephen’s was 13th in the 16-team field after its opening-round 375. The Falcons’ scorers were Maria Huang (8-over 80), Catherine Huang (89), Kendall Miller (91) and Bella O’Donnell (115).

Orlando First Academy opened with a 5-under 283 for a nine-shot lead. First Academy’s Ariel Yu and West Palm Beach Oxbridge Academy’s Maisie Filler shared the lead at 4-under 68.
