Lakewood Ranch’s Seth McGarry traded to Phillies
Seth McGarry played his high school baseball not far from Bradenton’s historic ballpark but while at Lakewood Ranch High School, he never had a chance to play at McKechnie Field, now LECOM Park.
After getting drafted by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the eighth round in 2015 out of Florida Atlantic University, McGarry got to live out that dream this season with the Florida State League’s Bradenton Marauders.
For four months.
On Monday, the Pirates traded McGarry to the Philadelphia Phillies for 40-year-old reliever Joaquin Benoit.

McGarry, 23, was 1-0 with 14 saves and a 1.34 ERA in 31 appearances as a right-handed reliever for the Marauders this season. He gave up only 20 hits in 40 1/3 innings, and struck out 38 and walked 14 for a 0.84 WHIP. The 2017 FSL All-Star, whose fastball can reach the upper 90s, allowed only one home run with the Marauders.
It is expected McGarry will report to the Phillies’ FSL affiliate in Clearwater.
