Manatee quarterback Ryan Overstreet’s family is moving and the rising sophomore will transfer to Plant City, where former Hurricanes offensive coordinator James Booth is the head coach, the Herald has learned.

Overstreet was the Hurricanes’ quarterback during their spring game and was poised to start this fall following A.J. Colagiovanni's graduation. Overstreet served as one of Colagiovanni’s backups last fall, but didn’t make an appearance with the varsity team.

“It was extremely difficult,” Overstreet said Saturday. “I lived here my whole life. I've had a lot of great friends on the team. (It's) two miles from where I was born. I know a lot of people in the community and I was really close to a lot of those players, so to transfer and move was real difficult.”

With the Florida High School Athletic Association’s new transfer rule, players can switch to any school provided that school isn't at capacity, they haven't practiced with their previous team and can provide transportation to the new school. Fall practices begin Monday, marking the end of the summer transfer period for any players wishing to play for a different school for the 2017 season.

Overstreet is moving to Plant City, which will place him in the Raiders’ district and allow him to reunite with his former offensive coordinator.

Overstreet said he felt he played well in the spring game against Lakeland Lake Gibson.

“After that game in the locker room, even though it was a loss, there were a lot of teammates that were coming up to me and congratulating me,” Overstreet said. “And telling me that I had earned their respect.”

The Hurricanes have four other quarterbacks on the roster, according to MaxPreps. Senior Sir Williams is Manatee’s top defensive back and has an offer from UT Martin. Senior Logan Frasier is a transfer from Palmetto. Junior Ryan Davidson and sophomore Michael Oliver have never made a varsity appearance for the Hurricanes.
