Pina’s walk-off single lifts Palm Beach in 14th inning
Leobaldo Pina hit a walk-off single with two outs in the 14th inning, as the Palm Beach Cardinals topped the Bradenton Marauders 3-2 on Wednesday.
Thomas Spitz scored the game-winning run after he reached base on a walk, stole second and then went to third on a wild pitch at Roger Dean Stadium.
After Bradenton scored two runs in the first inning, Palm Beach tied the game at 2 after Jeremy Martinez hit an RBI double in the second inning and Andy Young hit a solo home run in the sixth.
Palm Beach starter Ryan Helsley allowed two runs and four hits over six innings. He struck out seven and walked one. Austin Warner (1-0) got the win with three innings of two-hit relief.
Jess Amedee (3-5) took the loss in the Florida State League game.
Young homered and singled in the win. Shane Billings singled three times.
For the Marauders, Cole Tucker doubled and singled.
With the victory, Palm Beach breaks the tie atop the South Division second-half standings. Palm Beach improves to 9-4. Bradenton falls to 8-5.
Despite the loss, Bradenton is 4-1 against Palm Beach this season.
The teams wrap up the three-game series Thursday before the Marauders return home for a four-game set against the Tampa Yankees.
