University Park pro Sue Ertl wins Ohio Women’s Open senior title
University Park Country Club head teaching pro Sue Ertl won the senior division title at the recent Ohio Women’s Open after carding a 73-75—148, which earned her a fifth-place finish overall.
Ertl, who played on the LPGA Tour from 1982-93, previously won the tournament in 2005 and has been inducted in two halls of fame (the Women’s Collegiate Golf Hall of Fame and Michigan State University Hall of Fame). Her career low is 64, and she has 10 career holes-in-ones.
She won the seniors division by one shot over Karen Bennett and Lisa DePaulo, and finished 10 shots behind Jessica Porvasnik on the overall leaderboard.
FSGA Women’s tournament in town
The 23rd annual Florida State Women’s Amateur Stroke Play Championship begins Friday at Sara Bay Country Club. The 54-hole Florida State Golf Association event is open to the public free of charge. Tee times begin at 8 a.m. each round off Nos. 1 and 10.
Bradenton’s Ailsa Clark and Courtney Cotterill are in the 84-player field along with Lakewood Ranch’s Sara DeMarco, Maya Isom and Sophia Warren and Longboat Key’s Katherine Moore-Lilly. The six area players are vying to dethrone Sumterville’s Kaeli Jones, who won the 2016 tournament with a 6-under 210.
Junior update
The Greater Sarasota Junior Golf Association held two tournaments on Monday. The 18-holers played Waterford Golf Club in Venice, while the 9-holers competed at Sarasota’s Village Green.
At Waterford, three Manatee County juniors took runner-up honors in different age divisions:
▪ Bradenton’s Dylan Gabbart placed second in the boys 16-18 division with an 83. Punta Gorda’s William Brumbaugh won with an 80.
▪ Lakewood Ranch’s Katie Kroos-Roberts finished runner-up in the girls 16-18s after carding an 83. She finished three shots behind Sarasota’s Aaron Whitley.
▪ And in the boys 13-15s, Bradenton’s Bryan Choi took second with a 76. Sarasota’s Noah Kumar won with a 4-under 68.
At Village Green, Bradenton’s Matthew Joseph defeated Sarasota’s Connor DeMichele in a playoff to win the boys 11-and-older division after the pair posted matching 35s.
Holes-in-one
On June 17 at Peridia Golf Club, George Pappas aced the 152-yard 14th hole with a 3/4-hybrid. Witnesses were Bill Fenner, John Shaver and Marie Heinrick.
On June 28 at IMG Academy Golf Club, Pren Ignozzi aced the 140-yard 11th hole with a 5-iron. Witnessed by Craig Pirello.
On June 30 at University Park Country Club, Kathy Case aced the 84-yard fifth hole with a 7-iron. Witnesses were Nancy Kelly, Mary Jane Sanacore and Dianne Hayden.
On July 1 at River Wilderness Golf and Country Club, Bob Mustain aced the 172-yard fifth hole with a 24-degree hybrid. Witnesses were Gary Riese, Jason Chambers and Shawn Talley.
