Manatee High’s Lespasio wins Varsity race at North Port Invitational

Manatee’s Raquel Lespasio and Alison Ecker finished first and second in the girls Varsity race to lead Manatee High School to a second-place team finish at the North Port Invitational at North Port High School on Saturday.

Lespasio finished in 19 minutes, 48.10 seconds, three seconds off the school record that has stood since 2003. Senior Alison Ecker finished in 20:15.00. Sophomore Sara Goethe finished 15th in 21:44.60; she was one of six Hurricanes runners who posted personal records.

In the boys race, Kai Soderberg was the top individual, finishing 11th in 18:00.00. Brendan Beardsley, of Braden River, was the only other top-20 finishers. He was 15th in 18:18.00.

In the Elite division, Lakewood Ranch finished third, 10 points behind champion Newsome, on the strength of John Rivera (8th, 16:40) and Jonathan Reid (9th, 16:43). Saint Stephen’s Andrew Csubak finisyhed 14th (16:50.80). In the girls Elite race, the Mustangs finished fourth, led by Andrea McDonald (19th, 20:09).

Golf: Plantation American Heritage shot a 2-under-par team total to win the rain-shortened Bob Boast Volkswagen Invitational at Lakewood Ranch Golf & Country Club.

The tournament drew 16 teams, including host Lakewood Ranch, and used a shotgun start on the Royal Lakes course.
