Manatee County Food Bank shelves bare, donations vital

Cindy Sloan of The Food Bank of Manatee points out the dearth of food on some of the shelves at food bank on Monday. Sloan hopes that the Aug. 28 "Stuff The Bus" food drive will replenish the bank, which often gets depleted during the summer.

After shopping at a local Publix Wednesday, I felt it necessary to make a plea to the citizens of Manatee County. I was told that the food banks are picking up collections being taken at the registers and not waiting for the Stuff the Bus event that will be coming Sunday. There is such a need at our food bank, they cannot wait!

As the founding commissioner of the Food Bank Giving Challenge, I feel it necessary that our citizens and businesses of Manatee County know that the food bank needs food now! The food bank receives the food and organizations over the entire county get food distributed to them.

Please look inside your cabinets and contribute. Donation barrels are all around the county or call Manatee County Food Bank at 941-747-4655 for food or cash donations.

Let’s help the less fortunate.

Carol Whitmore, Manatee County Commissioner, At-Large
