Thoughts about bad driver thoughts

State Trooper Kenn Watson of the Florida Highway Patrol represented his organization at the special Bradenton Marauders’ Public Safety Day game Sunday. Some fans at the game said that officers such as Watson must be supported because they play a critical role in our society.

I often wonder what is inside the heads of some of the drivers I encounter every time I travel anywhere in my car. If I were able to see what they were thinking, it would probably go something like this:

“Man, I’m a good driver. I should be a NASCAR driver. I make awesome moves to advance my position through some of the busiest traffic areas around town every day.”

“I’m traveling north, through Bradenton, on 1st Street, approaching State Road 64. I intend to continue north across the DeSoto Bridge, but I know if I stay in the far left lane, I will pass a lot of cars, as long as I wait until the last block where the left lane becomes a left-turn-only lane. I know that some overly cautious driver, or at least one who is concerned about his own welfare and the safety of those around them, will hit the brakes to allow me to cut over. Even when there is only a foot or so, I can make it. I am that good!”

“I love going out on I-75 to see what kind of mayhem I can cause there, too. I like to leave ’em in a cloud of dust and a pile of debris. They’ll never catch me. They’re too preoccupied picking up the pieces.”

“With all of my efforts, I can arrive at my destination at least two minutes ahead of everyone else. What can I do with two minutes? Well, there is time to pour a stiff drink and light up. My nerves are wrecked for having to put up with all those awful drivers I had to pass.”

Or maybe there is simple mindlessness inside their heads and a complete absence of regard for others. I think that is most likely the case.
