Sheriff robbed again by county

Manatee County Sheriff Brad Steube listens as the Manatee County Commission considers putting an infrastructure sales tax referendum on the ballot, and how those funds would be allocated, during a meeting Tuesday.

Recently Sheriff Brad Steube made his annual journey to the county commissioners’ meeting to “sing for his supper.” His request never changes. He needs more money to hire more staff and buy additional vehicles. It’s a simple request but he seldom receives what he needs.

Last year’s request for staff was met with a zilch. We are below FBI standards for staffing. Sheriff Steube knows more than anyone on the dais what is needed. He trained for his job through years of hard work. Those on the dais got the most votes for their “job.”

Our community is rapidly expanding. Every time the commissioners approve another development project, the need for law enforcement is greater. It doesn’t take a brain surgeon to point out the fact that law enforcement is stretched to the limit now. The day may come when we call 911 and get a busy signal or told to call back later.

Well, Sheriff Steube might not have gotten his supper last week, but he did receive “his lunch.”

As you retire, Sheriff Steube, thank you for your years of service and making this a safer community.Thank you for how much you’ve done for our community.
