Thanks to the Herald news staff for two stories: In a recent edition, reporter Hannah Morse informed readers about the bad consequences of balloon releases, including releases of more than 10 being illegal in Florida. Then more recently was notice of the fireworks around the Beach House restaurant being canceled due to nesting birds, with the full support of owner Ed Chiles.

Both of those stories give evidence of strong community support for smart, logical action to protect and promote our local wildlife.

I hope that the first story will persuade individuals, groups and vendors who might have formerly thought a balloon release was a good component of their respective events to reconsider and not include that action that frequently has bad consequences for a variety of creatures.

Likewise, one less fireworks exhibit on a weekend that includes many such shows will not be missed, and Mr. Chiles and those making the decision to cancel deserve our congratulations and support.

These are two of the accommodations that it is wise to make for the long-run prosperity and quality of life for our community. Thanks for helping inform residents.
