New gigantic recycle bins coming to Manatee County present headache
A May 11 letter to the editor appearing in the Opinion section of this paper illustrates just another example of how well intended, but not well thought-out plans can backfire.
This letter accurately pointed out a soon to become obvious oversight on the part of county planners -- that many residents will be unable to accommodate these large 64-gallon recycling bins in their garages.
It appears that the county planners again lacked forethought in hastily implementing Single Stream Recycling to eliminate the cost of the two-person collection job by use of a reach-arm collection truck with a single driver.
Only these large bins can be used for these reach-arm trucks, so the residents of Manatee County are stuck with having to use these oversized monstrosities for their recyclables -- and, as pointed out in the previous letter to the editor, not user friendly for many residents.
The county planners have again focused, with myopia, on solving a recycling collection problem for the county without fully taking into consideration all the implications of how Single Stream Recycling could adversely impact the residents. These types of decisions, of course, usually result to unintended consequences.
