Reject Manatee County school board plan linking sales tax, impact fee

Peter Logan, president Medallion Homes, and Mark Barnebey, attorney, listen as Diana Greene, superintendent of Manatee County schools, speaks about impact fees during the monthly meeting of the Manatee Tiger Bay Club on Thursday at Pier 22.GRANT JEFFERIES/Bradenton Herald gjefferies@bradenton.com

Feel the Burn ...

No, not "the Bern." No, not the burning sensation that can be ameliorated by antacids.

The burn in your gut when you realize you are being duped by the school board. Take a deep breath. Take control. We can prevail!

Our school board is playing us against the developers. It confidently concluded that we parents have no alternative but to submit to their dictate: impact fees will be reduced by 50 percent once we obsequiously vote for their caveat, the half-cent sales tax extension. Wrong!

Our community must unite to ensure that common sense prevails. Vote against the board's proposal in November. When it does go down, the short-term financial impact will be minimal compared to the alternative long-term shortfall.

If the board does not rectify the situation promptly, "Vote the rascals out!" The litmus test for "new" board members will be what is best for our children, not developers.
