Letters to the Editor

Authors of Federalist Papers highly educated Founder Fathers

I happened to glance at a copy of your paper recently, and noticed what I think was a Letter to the Editor. The writer was grateful for the U.S. Constitution and -- wanting to learn more about it -- said he was "directed by a librarian to the Federalist Papers."

What impressed him first, he said, was "the grammatical use of the language" by the authors, "despite their lack of education and not having Google or the Internet available to them."

When I read that, I couldn't believe that there was no editorial comment to correct such blatant misinformation. Your readers deserve to be better informed than that.

You might start with suggesting that the writer and other readers investigate the lives of Alexander Hamilton, James Madison and John Jay. For starters, two of them were graduates of Kings College, later to become Columbia University, and the third graduated from the predecessor school that became Princeton. They all read and spoke several languages, received initial education from clergy (or a teacher in one case) and went on to outstanding careers and become influential in our government's formation. They had much better educations than most of our high school and college graduates today.
