Only reasonable regulations aimed at guns are on table
I must respond to Mr. Richard J. Galle's letter in the Oct. 14 Herald. Mr. Galle continues to provide misinformation about gun rights that is proffered by the NRA and many other gun activists.
I know of no words or actions by President Obama to come out against Mr. Galle's right to arm himself.
To the contrary, President Obama and many concerned citizens and legislators only want to have reasonable requirements for background checks to prevent the mentally ill and criminals from obtaining guns; to close loopholes that allow gun shows and some rogue gun stores to sell guns with little concern for who is buying the guns; and to provide reasonable restrictions on the types of guns that are available to the general public.
As a former Army officer who has used an AR-15 rifle and other semi-automatic and automatic weapons, I can assure that these weapons are not necessary for wildlife hunting.
Mr. Galle claims that because the president is surrounded by many armed security guards that this is establishing a double standard. This is ridiculous logic.
If Mr. Galle has a problem with the president of the United States being protected by security guards, I think he is barking up the wrong tree. And if Mr. Galle thinks he should be surrounded by many armed security guards to protect him like the president is protected, he can certainly hire some.
