As president emeritius of State College of Florida states, trustees wrong to end tenure

Sarah H. Pappas, the former president and president emeritus of State College of Florida, wrote an outstanding letter to the Herald, published Sept. 26. Her tenure as president of SCF was from 1997 to her time of retirement in 2008. Her support for the college as shown in her letter is both outstanding and timely.

I was privileged to be appointed to the Board of Trustees of Manatee Community College on May 6, 1980 and served for seven years on the board and was elected as chairman of the board for five consecutive terms. Steve Korcheck was president of the College and he was outstanding in his commitment to MMC, its students and the faculty.

The name of the college has changed; however, to my knowledge the level of achievement by the faculty and the students has not changed. I agree with Sarah. H. Pappas in her alarm over the Board of Trustees discussion and decision to discontinue offering a continuing contract to new faculty members.

I urge the board to reconsider the decision as to discontinuing offering a continuing contract to new faculty members. This paradigm will likely change in ways you may well find to be a detriment to the college, not an enhancement.
