Why are Manatee County politicians not telling people to wear their masks? | Letter to the editor

For reasons I do not completely understand, the wearing of masks to protect one’s self and others has quickly gone out of style in Manatee County. Because I am old (so old that the few people who might recognize my name may say, “I thought he was dead.”) and I am at high risk for the coronavirus. Thus I am extremely disappointed at this failure to mask.

I saw on the internet this morning that the medical community and the mayor of Montgomery, Ala., had taken a stand encouraging the wearing of masks for the protection of all the people in Montgomery. And that made me realize that neither the medical professionals nor the governmental leaders in this county have taken a stand on what I consider and an important health issue.

Where are the mayors, county commissioners and the medical society when their leadership is needed? Is it because the president, vice president and our governor don’t appear to believe that masks are necessary that they are afraid to speak out on this issue? Do they realize that by their silence they are approving this no mask policy?

I no longer expect leadership from the top, but I would hope the locals would take a stand for health in their community.
