Blood donations need to be tested for coronavirus antibodies | Letter to the editor

I just read the article about using plasma from those who have recovered from COVID-19 as a potential treatment.

I am a regular blood donor and my most recent donation was last week. While I was there I asked if they were now taking a drop to test for antibodies to the virus, and was surprised to find out that they had no idea nor had anyone else asked the question.

Since all the scientists say that the key to reopening is knowing how many people have had the virus and that so many are asymptotic, it would seem to make sense to check the blood of all donors including those who have never had symptoms of the disease.

This could identify potential plasma donors but even if not used for that purpose, it could at least add to the database of survivors.
