Let’s fight House bill that gives Trump power to shrink monuments
Like many others, I like to travel to the great natural wonders of this country, the national parks and monuments which are so unique to the USA. That is why I am so concerned by an effort in Congress to eliminate and restrict the President’s authority to designate new monuments, and to allow him to shrink existing monuments.
HR 3990 would do all this, plus give private landowners whose land abuts proposed monument borders the power to veto any new monument for any reason. It would also prohibit new monuments of a natural or scientific wonder, and only allow ones that protected artifacts.
Most of our national parks began as national monuments like the Grand Canyon, Muir Woods, and others.
It would be a tragedy to allow our public lands to be handed over to private interests. This would impact the tourist dollars that flow from the millions of citizens and foreigners who visit these places, and would be an irreparable loss for our children and future generations.
Ask your representative to oppose HR 3990.
