My son Mike is a master mechanic for Boast Volkswagen. One recent day, he was working on a newer car that had wiring problems.

When he removed the dash to get to the wiring harnesses, a big rat was staring at him before it scurried back into the abyss of the car’s complex dashboard interior.

As he worked to solve the problem of the car’s short, there it was —a neatly made little nest of grass and VW wires and six little pink babies with eyes not yet open!

He said he carefully took the nest and placed it in a bin and left for lunch, hoping mom would come back when all was quiet. Unfortunately, momma was not seen again and by the close of work, my son contacted Ed Straight's animal rehab on Anna Maria Island. After work, he drove the tiny rescues out to the island and gave them, hopefully, a chance of survival.

I was so proud that I raised such a compassionate son.
