Formula 2 Bradenton Area Riverwalk Regatta a must-see spectacle

An intriguing spectacle is fast approaching that promises a batch of eye candy: The Formula 2 Bradenton Area Riverwalk Regatta will dominate the Manatee River with championship powerboat races along with world-class competitors performing stunts, a fireworks show the likes of which has never been seen here, concerts in the park and plenty of food, enough to feed 75,000 people.

That figure is some 25,000 short of what event organizers expect in attendance for the Feb. 7 inaugural event and hope becomes an annual economic bonanza for Manatee County.

A major coup came with state permission for the daylong closure of the Green Bridge to vehicle traffic so spectators can enjoy prime viewing. Riverwalk should be jammed, too.

The one hitch came with the cancellation of the Christian music concert planned for Palmetto after talks failed to attract a headline act. Next year should be different as Palmetto merits a big event in Sutton Park.

Perhaps the most explosive part of the regatta will be the conclusion, fireworks from a company with experience on a grand scale -- from the Super Bowl to presidential inaugurations. We expect to be dazzled by Zambelli International's show.

The free family festival also includes a Kids Zone and Frisbee dogs.

It's only a week away.
