Tropical Storm Lorenzo weakened dramatically Tuesday mid-morning, and forecasters are now expecting it to dissipate earlier than expected. The track remains completely out to sea and far from any occupied land.

The National Hurricane Center expects Lorenzo to hang onto tropical storm status through the end of the week. From there, the latest forecast track suggests Lorenzo could dissolve as soon as Friday.

As of 11 a.m. Tuesday, Lorenzo had maximum sustained winds of 45 mph, a big drop from earlier in the morning.

Forecasters said there’s a chance that Lorenzo won’t survive to the weekend, as long-range computer models have continued to suggest it will dissipate sooner than the hurricane center had originally forecast.

“Based on a combination of the models and the lower initial intensity, the NHC intensity forecast has again been nudged downward, and now shows dissipation occurring by day 4,” forecasters wrote in the 11 a.m. update.
