Free sandbags are being made available to residents ahead of Tropical Storm Idalia’s anticipated arrival as a major hurricane on Florida’s Gulf Coast this week.

As of Monday, Bradenton and Tampa Bay are under a hurricane and storm surge warning, with hurricane conditions expected to arrive within 36 hours.

Local public safety officials are urging residents to finalize preparations for the storm as soon as possible, including readying property for possible flood impacts. Using sandbags at points of entry around your house can prevent flood waters from getting inside.

As of Monday, significant storm surge of 4 to 7 feet is anticipated for coastal Manatee County. Surge is also likely along the Manatee River and other inland water bodies.
