6-year-old girl dies when driver runs over family of 3 in crosswalk, FL cops say
A 6-year-old girl was killed and two family members were injured when a passing driver rolled over them in a crosswalk, according to Florida investigators.
The collision happened just after 7:30 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 4, as the trio was walking to a school in the Tampa area, the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release.
Identities of the victims have not been released.
“When (deputies) arrived, they found a woman and her two children suffering from injuries. Deputies began rendering aid and called (emergency medics) for assistance. Shortly after, the 6-year-old female victim was pronounced dead at the scene,” the sheriff’s office said.
“The mother and her 10-year-old son were transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.”
Investigators determined the three were walking to a nearby school when they “properly” used a crosswalk at the intersection of Mohr and Sheldon roads, officials said.
The 77-year-old driver made a right turn onto Sheldon Road at a green light and drove over the family, officials said. He was taken to a hospital for undisclosed reasons and later cited “for a violation of the right of way with death,” officials said.
“An ordinary walk to school turned into an unimaginable tragedy for a family who should have simply been starting their day together,” Sheriff Chad Chronister said in the release. “This is a heartbreaking reminder that every second behind the wheel carries responsibility, especially when children are walking to school.”
