An arrest warrant has been issued for a high school football player accused of intentionally smacking one of his opponents on the head at their game, according to investigators in North Florida.

The breech of sportsmanship ignited additional fights at the game, requiring police intervention, the Fernandina Beach Police Department said in a Nov. 4 news release.

Bell High School player Daniel Byers, 18, is wanted on a charge of battery, police said.

“The charges stem from an incident that occurred on October 31st, during a football game between Fernandina Beach High School and Bell High School,” police said.

“During the game, Mr. Byers aggressively pushed and then removed the helmet of a 15 year old Fernandina Beach High School player, subsequently striking him in the head with it. Referees and coaching staff intervened quickly, but multiple scuffles erupted both on and off the field.”

Two Fernandina Beach police officers restored order by separating the players, police said.

“As a precautionary measure, the Bell High School bus and players were escorted off Amelia Island by the Fernandina Beach Police Department,” police said.

The arrest warrant was issued in conjunction with the 4th Circuit State Attorney’s Office, police said.

Details of what prompted the attack were not released. It happened after Fernandina Beach won the game 48 to 21, according to Maxpreps.com.

Byers is a 265-pound senior tackle for Bell High, the site says.

The Gilchrist County School District, which includes Bell High, released a statement to McClatchy News noting “actions will be taken.”

“Gilchrist County Schools is aware of an incident that occurred during the recent football game between Bell High School and Fernandina Beach High School, in which a Bell High School student struck a Fernandina Beach High School student with a helmet,” the statement notes.

“The Gilchrist County School District does not condone any form of aggressive or unsportsmanlike behavior. This incident does not reflect the values or expectations we hold for our students, athletes, or community. The situation is currently under review in accordance with district policies and athletic guidelines. Because this matter involves students, we are limited in the details we can share. Appropriate actions will be taken based on the findings of our review. We remain committed to promoting respect, sportsmanship, and integrity — both on and off the field — for all Gilchrist County Schools’ students and teams.”

Fernandina Beach is about a 35-mile drive northeast from Jacksonville.
