Man wearing ankle monitor runs over 13-year-old, leaves her to die, FL cops say
A man out on bond and wearing an ankle monitor has been identified as the driver who ran over a 13-year-old girl and drove away without stopping, according to Florida investigators.
The crash happened after dark Tuesday, Sept. 30, on Arlington Road North in Jacksonville, and Genesis Webber died at the scene, the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office said in an Oct. 2 news release.
“Surveillance footage from the area showed a truck veering off the road, hitting Genesis on the sidewalk, crashing through a chain-link fence, and continuing on,” the sheriff’s office said.
Genesis was a seventh grader, walking home after getting off an after-school activity bus, WTLV reported.
“She wasn’t doing anything wrong. She was just walking home from her bus stop, as she does every day,” her mother, Shardee Webber, told the station.
A Traffic Homicide Unit investigation found evidence linking the crash to 54-year-old Andre Myers, who “was out on bond on felony charges and wearing an ankle monitor,” the sheriff’s office said.
“Our Corrections Department joined in our investigation by providing locations where Myers frequents,” officials said. “Late Wednesday night, District 2 Patrol officers located Myers asleep inside his truck. Our officers arrested him.”
Myers is charged with leaving the scene of a fatal crash on public or private property without rendering aid, officials said.
A funeral for Genesis has yet to be scheduled, according to a fundraising campaign for expenses.
“There are no words for the pain I feel right now: my heart is broken, and I am just trying to breathe through each moment,” Shardee Webber wrote on the fundraising page.
