Accused drunk driver hits woman, goes 8 blocks with her body on car, FL cops say
A Florida woman was fatally hit by an accused drunk driver who drove eight blocks with her on his car windshield, police said.
Kjersten Aileen-Hermance Strang, 38, was riding an e-bike in a designated lane in Gulfport when a Nissan Altima struck her “at a high rate of speed” at about 10 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 20, the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release.
The Altima, driven by 22-year-old Xavier Omar Rigby, did not stop, according to deputies.
The force of the impact launched Strang off her bike and she landed on the windshield of Rigby’s car, and he “continued driving for approximately eight blocks before Strang was dislodged from the vehicle,” the sheriff’s office said.
Rigby didn’t call 911 or seek help for Strang, according to officials, and Strang was pronounced dead at the scene.
Strang was a single mother to a young boy, according to a GoFundMe page.
Authorities found Rigby “a short time later” at a liquor store in nearby St. Petersburg, the sheriff’s office said, adding that he “showed signs of impairment and refused to cooperate with field sobriety tests.”
He was arrested on charges of leaving the scene of a crash involving death, vehicular homicide leaving the scene, and DUI manslaughter, deputies said.
Rigby has a prior DUI and speeding offense and was previously forced to attend a Mothers Against Drunk Driving victim impact panel, WTVT reported. A judge denied bond for Rigby during a Monday, Sept. 22 court hearing, calling him “a danger to the community.”
Gulfport is a roughly 25-mile drive southwest from downtown Tampa.
