A gentle dog “has been through so much” — and now, he waits for a new home.

Saxon is up for adoption in Florida after he was saved from being put down.

“Saxon’s journey hasn’t been easy — he was found abandoned in a field with a rope tied around his neck and faced euthanasia at a shelter,” Lil Rascals Dog Rescue wrote Sept. 13 on Facebook. “Thankfully, he was given a second chance, and today he’s thriving in foster care while waiting for the forever home he deserves.”

While the Orlando-area rescue didn’t say when Saxon ended up in its care, he has become known as a pup “with a big heart and an even bigger smile.” The mixed-breed dog enjoys playing with toys but still has more to learn: namely, how fetch works, according to a social media post and an online adoption profile.

“Saxon is a sweet, affectionate boy who loves snuggles, giving kisses, and following his people around,” rescuers wrote. “He even does his signature ‘helicopter tail wag’ when he’s extra excited.”

Saxon also is described as a calm, treat-driven 8-year-old dog. Ideally, he would be matched with a patient owner who can keep him on his current training regimen.

Rescuers believe he could live with another laid-back pup or be the only furry friend in his next home.

“This boy has been through so much, yet his spirit shines with love,” the rescue wrote. “With patience and care, Saxon will reward his forever family with loyalty, gentleness, and a heart full of devotion.”

As of Sept. 17, the rescue’s website still listed Saxon among the dogs in need of new owners. The animal organization didn’t share additional details about him with McClatchy News on Sept. 16 and 17.
