A deputy responding to a home invasion accidentally shot the victim who reported it, Florida authorities said.

The deputy has been placed on paid administrative leave, according to the Orange County Sheriff’s Office, which didn’t disclose the deputy’s name.

A man in his 40s called 911 to report that four people tried to break into his Orlando home at around 3 p.m. Aug. 23, and he had fired shots at them, investigators said.

The four people ran off before deputies arrived, according to the sheriff’s office.

“When deputies arrived on scene, the victim went to unlock the door and one of the deputies accidentally discharged his agency firearm and struck the victim,” the department said in a statement.

The man was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and was discharged the same day, deputies said.

The deputy is on temporary leave as the Florida Department of Law Enforcement investigates the incident, authorities said.
