An attention-loving dog kept waiting for a home — then came a heartwarming adoption.

“They say the best things come to those who wait right? Well 1 year, 7 months, 21 days is how long Chipley waited for his forever home and today is his official ‘gotcha day,’” the Northwest Florida Great Dane Rescue wrote June 10 on Facebook. “His new momma, Allie, adores him and he was happy to oblige jumping right up in the bed at night to snuggle.”

Chipley finally got a second chance after he landed at the rescue in October 2023. He had been found as a stray and taken to a shelter, where no one claimed him. So, rescuers took him in and named him Chipley, a nod to the Florida Panhandle city where he once lived.

“He was super skinny and full of intestinal worms when he came to us,” Katie King, vice president of the rescue, told McClatchy News via email. “It didn’t take him long to gain back weight... and then some.”

In addition to his love for treats, Chipley is known for being a “sweetheart,” King wrote. He’s also a “tornado on four paws” when he gets the zoomies.

“Chip is a good time boy and is the life of the party,” the animal organization wrote on Facebook in April 2024. “The only thing bigger than his personality, is his heart! He is a ham for attention and loves to be rubbed on.”

Over time, Chipley also has shown off his lazy side. In those moments, he’s the “definition of couch potato pet rock,” adding to his quirks, according to King and the rescue.

“The funniest thing about him is when he toots, it surprises him and he hops up and looks around wondering what just came from his booty,” the animal organization wrote in its 2024 post.

Dogs at the rescue typically are adopted within six to 10 months. After Chipley experienced a longer wait than usual, rescuers shared the good news that he was matched with a loving owner.

“Welcome Home Chip,” rescuers wrote. “We knew your forever home was out there!!”
