Stolen Jeep hits and kills 70-year-old man as he walks near his home, Florida cops say
A stolen Jeep speeding through a residential neighborhood struck and killed a 70-year-old man as he was walking just feet from his home, investigators in Florida say.
He was identified as Edward Webb Jr. and the driver of the Jeep that struck him remains at large, according to the St. Petersburg Police Department.
The crash occurred at about 9:05 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 21, at the intersection of 12th Street South and Ninth Avenue South, police said in a news release.
“A Jeep Grand Cherokee seen traveling at a high rate of speed on northbound 12th Street South made a westbound turn onto (Ninth) Avenue South,” police said.
“Webb ... was crossing (Ninth) Avenue South near his home when he was struck. ... Webb later died of his injuries at Orlando Health Bayfront Hospital.”
Maps show Webb lives at a home on one corner of the intersection.
The Jeep did not stop after the collision, continuing about two blocks before “three young men” jumped out and ran, police said.
Investigators say the Jeep had been stolen earlier the same day, officials said.
Police have asked the public for help identifying the three people who fled. Anyone with information can call St. Pete Police at (727) 893-7780.
