A woman shot an intruder when he entered the bedroom where she and her family were hiding, Florida authorities said.

That man now faces charges. His attorney information is not available in Osceola County records.

On May 21, deputies responded to a burglary in progress at a home in Kissimmee, according to a news release from the Osceola County Sheriff’s Office.

They made contact with 28-year-old David Martinez-Estrada inside the home and ordered him to come out, but he refused, deputies said.

He continued to walk into the home, then deputies heard shots fired, according to the sheriff’s office.

Martinez-Estrada emerged from the residence and said he had been shot, deputies said. He was taken to a hospital.

When investigators spoke with a woman inside the home, she said she shot the man in self-defense when he “forced his way” into the bedroom where her family was, deputies said.

Martinez-Estrada is charged with criminal mischief, burglary to an occupied dwelling unarmed, stalking and resisting an officer without violence, according to the sheriff’s office.

Investigators called it an isolated incident.

Florida’s Stand Your Ground law allows occupants of a residence to use deadly force without retreating if they believe they are in imminent danger.

Kissimmee is in central Florida, about a 20-mile drive south from downtown Orlando.
