Someone on a morning walk heard a ‘noise’ from a drain in Florida. See the rescue

A man taking a morning walk made an unusual discovery in the Melrose Park neighborhood of Fort Lauderdale on Monday: a dog stuck in a storm drain.

“It was a unique find,” said Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue spokesman Steve Gollan. “We see ducks, cats and other critters down in drains, but hardly ever dogs.”

A video posted to the agency’s Facebook page (complete with inspirational music) shows a crew lowering a ladder to help the scared looking gray animal, which appears to be a pit bull mix breed.

The pup sniffs around and checks out the men above. She’s then plucked up by her scruff from the dreary, damp underground prison.

“The sweet momma dog was relieved to be out of the water,” said a statement from the Humane Society of Broward County of the beauty that firefighters named Nanna.

It is unclear exactly how long Nanna was trapped, but Gollan said a resident who lives nearby had heard barking for about three days, but could not figure out from where the sound was coming.

“She never thought to look in the drain,” he added.

Then on Monday morning around 9, a man taking a stroll heard “a noise that sounded like crying and went over to take a look,” Gollan said. The Good Samaritan was able to remove the grate, but the dog didn’t come out, so he called 911.

Fort Lauderdale rescue crews brought Nanna to the Humane Society of Broward County. According to spokeswoman Cherie Wachter, the stray, still lactating, won’t be able to be adopted until she gains “several pounds.”

“She’s super skinny,” Wachter said.

FB commenters inquired about her babies.

Firefighters searched for them down in the pipe, and walked Nanna around to find them, but were unsuccessful, authorities said.
