Grandma giving family ride on Easter didn’t see 7-year-old in front of van, FL cops say
A Florida grandmother had given family members a ride before hitting her 7-year-old granddaughter with a van on Easter, officials said.
The 70-year-old woman didn’t see the girl in front of her at the time of the deadly incident, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
Officials said the incident happened at about 4:30 p.m. on Sunday, April 17 in Groveland, a Lake County city that’s roughly 45 miles northwest of Orlando.
State troopers said the grandmother was parked in a driveway to drop off relatives. When everyone had gotten out of her van, she put the vehicle in drive, not noticing that the 7-year-old was in front of her, according to officials.
After the van struck the girl, she was taken to a Leesburg hospital, troopers said. She later died.
The child and her grandmother weren’t identified in a Florida Highway Patrol news release.
An investigation into the crash continues, according to the release shared with McClatchy News on April 18.
