Disgruntled former employee kills 5, self in Orlando business park, sheriff says
A former disgruntled employee of Fiamma Inc. in Orlando shot and killed five people, then turned the gun onto himself, Orange County Sheriff Jerry Demings said Monday morning.
“It’s a sad day for us here once again in Orange County,” Demings said at an 11 a.m. press conference near the scene.
The call of an active shooter came to emergency responders around 8:03 a.m. at the RV accessory business at 2427 Forsyth Road. Once deputies arrived to the scene two minutes later, they found three men and one woman who were already dead, Demings said. One man was transported to Orlando Regional Medical Center, but he later died of his injuries.
The 45-year-old suspect, who has not yet been named, killed himself.
According to Demings, the incident is not believed to be terror-related and there was no indication he had used a knife on the victims. The suspect had been fired from the business in April, and was the suspect in an alleged battery of a fellow employee in 2014, Demings said. He has misdemeanor charges like possession of marijuana and driving under the influence.
Seven people survived the incident and were not shot, Demings said. They were being interviewed by detectives at that time.
Orange County Mayor Theresa Jacobs was at the press conference, as well as representatives of the FBI, Florida Department of Law Enforcement and the fire department.
Gov. Rick Scott issued a statement on the incident: “Over the past year, the Orlando community has been challenged like never before. I have been briefed by our law enforcement officials on this tragic incident and Ann and I are praying for the families who lost loved ones today. I ask all Floridians to pray for the families impacted by this senseless act of violence. I will remain in contact with the Orlando law enforcement community throughout the day as more information is made available.”
Officials expect to name the suspect at a second press briefing at 1 p.m.
