If spill moves south, volunteers needed

MANATEE — The creeping Deepwater Horizon oil spill has not yet reached West Coast Florida beaches but one organization realizes if it does, lots of helpers will be needed immediately.

The Merchant Marine Captains Association, Fleet One, covering the Tampa Bay region, is urgently mustering a list of volunteers to combat the spill should it head south.

The Merchant Marines are looking for people with boats and people to man the boats for tasks on the water. The group is also referring people without boats or boating experience to other organizations for help with beach and bird cleaning.

Those who want to add their name to the list are asked to call The Merchant Marine Captains Association at (727) 238-8518.
